How does the Express Program calculate the funds you have left for a calendar year?

On your application, you may come across a section that shows you your "balance remaining for the calendar year", see below-

The amount in the above field indicates how much Express Program funding remains available for your company for Calendar Year 2023*. The formula used to calculate this number is $20,000 (cap for the year) - amount approved + amount returned.

The amount approved is the sum of your awards approved for CY '23; the amount returned is the sum of the funds remaining once your reimbursement request, if one is pending, has been processed and any amount associated with a course that a grantee indicates they will no longer pursue (hence, the amount is "returned").

Note: When submitting an application, if the amount shown is a negative value, you do not have any funds available to request for the remainder of CY ’23. Grant recipients that have been awarded more than $20,000 prior to July 10th, 2023, will show a negative number.
